Proper excavation, sub-base installation, drainage and compaction are the keys to a long-lasting installation.
Every Great Driveway Starts Below the Surface
Before we think about laying a single paving block or preparing concrete, we start by assessing the existing ground conditions. Every property is different, and no two driveways should ever be treated exactly the same.
Some older driveways have multiple layers of previous surfaces hidden underneath, while others may have soft ground that requires additional preparation. Rather than simply paving over existing materials, we excavate to the correct depth so we can build a completely new foundation that will properly support the finished driveway.
This stage can look like the least impressive part of the project, but it’s often the most important. Skipping proper excavation or failing to remove unsuitable material can cause movement later, regardless of how attractive the finished surface looks.
Building a Strong Foundation
Once the ground has been excavated, we begin constructing the foundation using quality Type 1 MOT sub-base.
This material is specifically designed to create a solid platform capable of supporting the weight of vehicles for many years. However, simply tipping the material into the excavation isn’t enough. Every layer needs to be spread evenly and compacted thoroughly using professional equipment.
Compaction is one of the most overlooked parts of driveway construction, yet it’s one of the biggest reasons poorly installed driveways fail. If the sub-base isn’t compacted correctly, it will continue settling once vehicles begin using the driveway. That’s when homeowners start noticing dips, uneven paving and standing water.
At The Paving People, we compact the sub-base in carefully controlled layers rather than trying to compact the entire depth in one go. Although this approach takes longer, it produces a much stronger and more stable foundation that’s designed to stand up to years of daily use. Getting the Levels Right

Proper levels and drainage planning are among the most important factors in preventing long-term driveway problems.
Before we begin laying the finished surface, we check all levels across the driveway and make any necessary adjustments. It takes time and precision, but it’s essential if you want a driveway that performs as well as it looks.
Installing Strong Edging
Once the foundations have been completed, we install the edging.
Many people think edging is simply decorative, but it actually performs a vital structural role. The edging helps keep the driveway locked together, preventing movement around the perimeter and ensuring the surface remains stable under the weight of vehicles.
Whether we’re installing block paving, resin bound or tarmac, we always make sure the edges are securely installed before moving on to the main surface. Weak edging often leads to spreading, movement and early signs of failure, particularly around entrance points where vehicles turn their wheels. A properly restrained edge is a key part of a durable driveway installation.
Preparing for the Finished Surface
Once the foundations, drainage and edging are complete, we can finally prepare for the driveway itself.
For block paving, we carefully screed the laying course to achieve a perfectly level finish before each block is laid with precision. Every joint is aligned, every cut is measured accurately and the finished surface is compacted before kiln-dried sand is brushed into the joints.
If we’re installing resin bound, tarmac or pattern imprinted concrete, the preparation beneath follows the same principles. Although the finished materials differ, they all rely on the same thing underneath: a properly prepared base capable of supporting the surface above.
This is why we always tell customers that the quality of a driveway isn’t determined by the final day’s work. It’s determined by everything that’s happened beforehand.
A Recent Block Paving Project in Sunderland
One of our favourite recent projects was a large block paving driveway we completed for a family in Sunderland.
The existing driveway had seen better days. Years of patch repairs had left it uneven, drainage was poor and sections had started to move under the weight of vehicles. The homeowners wanted something that would not only improve the appearance of the property but also provide enough parking space for several family cars without worrying about future movement.
The first stage was removing the entire existing driveway and excavating the area to the correct depth. Once everything had been cleared, we installed a brand new Type 1 sub-base, compacting it in layers to create a solid foundation. We also improved the drainage across the front of the property, ensuring rainwater would flow away correctly rather than collecting on the surface.
With the groundwork complete, we installed new edge restraints before laying the customer’s chosen block paving design. They selected a traditional brindle block with a contrasting charcoal border, giving the driveway a timeless appearance that perfectly complemented the house.
The finished project completely transformed the front of the property, but for us, the most satisfying part wasn’t the appearance. It was knowing the foundations underneath had been built correctly. The homeowners now have a driveway that’s designed to cope with daily use for many years rather than one that will require repairs after only a short period.

One of the biggest misconceptions we come across is that every driveway quote is for exactly the same job.
